A global reading movement, hosted quietly in Victoria Island
Silent Book Club began in 2012 when two friends in San Francisco met at a bar to read side by side. No assigned books, no homework, no one put on the spot. That simple idea has since grown into hundreds of chapters across dozens of countries, all built on the same quiet premise: bring your own book and read in good company.
Why Lagos needed one
Lagos moves fast and most things to do here come with noise attached. We wanted an afternoon that asks nothing of you beyond turning up with something to read. It is free, it is intellectual without being stuffy, and the community around it has grown month by month from readers who simply wanted a calm place to sit with their books.
Our chapter is part of the Alali creative family, and each edition is hosted at Alali Studio in Victoria Island. Some months we pair the reading hour with a small extra, board games, an exhibition, a maker stall, all optional and all after the reading is done.
